As is usually the case, this past three and a half day weekend was relaxing and not long enough. I left work early Friday afternoon, came home in the sweltering heat, put in an hour at the gym, then dinner and a couple drinks at the Panther Lounge. The a/c unit ran overtime all day long.
Slept in on Saturday, went for a midday bike ride around the city, scored an $8 pizza at Hy-Vee for $5 and spent the evening watching “They Were Expendable” and “L’Avventura”. I also found a website that streams vintage Simpson episodes — they didn’t have my favorite, “King Size Homer”, but they did have “The PTA disbands”, “Mr. Burns’ Heir” and “Lemon of Troy”, among other classics.
Sunday I woke up a bit early, spent a few hours on laundry, went for an afternoon bike ride around the same trails as Saturday, and then picked up Katya and spent the evening with her, drinking and catching up on each other’s lives since we last saw each other in December. Drove her home around midnight.
Today I hit the trails before 11 a.m. — Riverside all the way to downtown Waterloo, then down Sergeant Road to Hudson, stopping at Sergeant Park, then up through the bird sanctuary, up 58, around Prairie Lakes, up Dry Run Creek and back to the Mandalay. 31 miles today and over 68 miles for the weekend. Spent the rest of the afternoon reading outside. Had dinner with Katya and watched the new “True Grit” and “The Next Three Days”, the latter a pretty good caper/breakout movie.
My skin is red, but the Aloe Vera is keeping it cool. I’m not looking forward to work tomorrow, or the rest of the month for that matter. My partner will be gone tomorrow as well as the entire last week of July. I *really* hope we have a third person hired by then, otherwise I’m going to have a hard time keeping my head above water. Bleh. Off to bed.
